Reporting vehicle malfunctions to the NHTSA

There are millions of vehicles on the road in America. Most cars, at some time, will break down for you. You have to report anything that might make your car have a safety defect. It is also your responsibility to report any issues with non-original equipment, car seats or even your tires.

The importance of reporting defects

Safety of automobiles is the main concern of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. With millions of vehicles on the road, though, the NHTSA can’t track each and every single issue that may crop up. The NHTSA doesn’t know how to “connect the dots” without the help of other people. These are how recalls and investigation end up coming about. Car manufacturers often don’t like admitting defects in their autos until a safety recall is initiated, so reporting to the NHTSA is the only sure way to make certain action is taken on your complaint.

What you need to report

You should report any safety complaint or possible concern to the NHTSA. Failing brakes needs to be reported. An airbag deploying incorrectly should be reported. Report child seat difficulties, tires problems, and issues with other components also. Basically anything and every little thing that could cause a crash, make a crash worse or put life and limb at risk in a vehicle.

How you can report to the NHTSA

Reporting a possible problem to the NHTSA is relatively easy. The number you are able to call is 888-327-4236 or there is also the Office of Defects Investigation website. You will need to know the make and model of the car you want to complain about. The NHTSA needs to be able to contact you as well in case an investigation happens. The database takes this info you give them and connects it with the info from every person else who has made a similar complaint.
