ABC News reports that what began as invasion of privacy in a dorm room at New Jersey’s Rutgers University has spiraled to the tragic suicide of 18-year-old freshman Clementi. Media reports indicate that fellow Rutgers students Ravi and Molly Wei orchestrated the live online broadcast that ultimately led Clementi into despondency and suicide. Soon after his horrific online outing, Clementi signed off on Facebook and signed out of life by jumping off a bridge.
A goodbye was what Tyler Clementi told everyone
On September 22 at 8:42 p.m., Clementi’s Facebook post read “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.” The body of Clementi has not been found yet, however there was a body discovered just north of the bridge on the Hudson River. New Jersey authorities were the ones to find the body. Clementi’s Rutgers University ID was discovered in a wallet nearby. There was also his driver’s license contained in the wallet.
Tyler Clementi’s suicide was verified by Paul Mainardi who is the Clementi family attorney. This statement said that Clementi was a wonderful person that was really great with music as well.
‘I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.’
Prosecutor Kaplan explained that because Tyler Clementi’s gay encounter was broadcasted through iChat, both Rutgers Scarlet Knights Dharun Ravi and Wei are being charged with two counts of invasion of privacy. There was a remark made by Ravi about this. He said on Twitter:
“Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
Ravi was on Twitter again a few days later. He tweeted something new:
“Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it’s happening again.”
Authorities gets to take Wei and Ravi in
Wei and Ravi both turned themselves in to the new Jersey police. Neither remains in police custody anymore though. Based on ABC News, Wei was discharged on her own recognizance, when Ravi managed to post $25,000 bail. The investigation will continue leaving a lot more info to be found.
