UGA top Princeton party school 2010, BYU stone cold sober again

Princeton Review party school rankings were issued Monday. Princeton Review’s infamous party school rankings put University of Georgia at the top of the list. UGA officials deflected the party school news by mentioning the school finished high in more respectable categories of the Princeton Review college ranks. For the 13th straight year, Mormon college Brigham Young University was the anti-party college, topping the list of “stone-cold sober schools.

UGA no stranger to the party school list

Since the Princeton party school ratings started in 1992, UGA has made the list 10 times. The university claimed the top spot for the very first time this year. The small town of Athens, Ga. , as outlined by the Associated Press, has about 100 bars surrounding the UGA campus. Parties are part of student life from August to May each year. For numerous students the weekend begins on Thursdays and doesn’t end until class on Monday Morning. The list on not one any school wants to lead, a UGA spokesperson told AP. UGA appearing in other Princeton Review college ranks such as the top 50 “Best Values” list and also the “Green Honor Roll” of the most environmentally conscious campuses are being overshadowed by the party school list.

State universities perennial Princeton party schools

AOL News said that freshman boys and girls bound for UGA probably got a little more excited about the upcoming school year when the Princeton Review party school ranks were released. Most of the top 10 typically includes state schools and 2010 follows that pattern. Coming in just behind UGA was Ohio University in nearby Athens. Georgia beat out Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University and University of Florida – which were the top Princeton party schools over the last three years.

Students and faculty earn UGA’s top party school status

Even though it started several initiatives to cut down on student drinking and temper the school’s party image, UGA rose to the top of the Princeton party school ranks. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the university has instituted tougher sanctions against students caught drinking, and it has tightened UGA tailgating rules for football game-days. UGA tailgaters trashed the historic North Campus following a September 2009 game, dumping about 70 tons of garbage. Intoxicated revelers were seen urinating and defecating on the campus grounds. And former athletic director Damon Evans resigned last month, shortly after his drunken driving arrest. Prior to Evans’ arrest, he urged students not to drink and drive in public service announcements produced by the university.
